-By Myles Trainer; Photos by Jessica Normandeau and Myles Trainer Lime green Tamaracks flashed by, almost changing in color as we passed through Montana’s fall landscape. A break in the trees revealed a rogue trail that had emerged under the radar. A lip, sculpted from a bank using logs to hold its figure, would propel riders into the air to a large step down landing. As we drove to the Whitefish Bike Retreat, that view reminded me of all the trails I created as a kid without permission. The responsibility free days of being a kid, were they over? Not at a place like the Bike Retreat. Arriving at the Retreat, I realized the place had been erected by bikers for bikers. One sign pointed to the pump track, one to the Whitefish Trail, another to the camp sites, and finally, driving to the top of the property,we stopped at the Lodge. It is a place where riders of all ages can kick back mid-ride or post-ride, for a beer, shower, quick bike tune-up, or general camaraderie from other visiting riders. With the property sitting on some of the area’s best winding single track, the logistics are taken care of like those sleep overs that were arranged for you as a kid. Whitefish Bike Retreat is located right on the Whitefish trail and is just 4 miles from the popular Spencer Mountain trail. “Fat and happy: Cycling becomes a new winter sport with fatbikes”
-By Sam Campbell from the Daily Inter Lake; Photos by Patrick Cote/Daily Inter Lake Once Mother Nature has spit ice and snow onto their favorite routes, many Flathead Valley cyclists succumb to the elements and toss a blanket over their bike in the corner of the garage. Luckily, the fatbike sensation is turning winter into another active season for cyclists. With tires ranging from 3.5 to 4.8 inches, “fatbikes” get their name from their oversized tires that sit on a mountain-bike style of frame. While a typical road bike may have a tire pressure ranging from 80 to 120 pounds per square inch, (psi) and mountain bikes around 35 to 60 psi, fatbikes, designed for rough trail elements like snow or sand, “float” most efficiently from 5-15 psi. Bird calls resonated throughout the forest, harmonizing with the hum of bike tires, creating a relaxing background melody. The two of us were exploring the Whitefish Trail system, dodging bears and spying on bushy tailed foxes, when we stumbled upon a small, strategically placed sign and side trail. Whitefish Bike Retreat, the sign read, with an arrow pointing off through the trees in a different direction. -By Tristan Scott; Photo by Lido Vizzutti The buffed-out single-track winds through verdant forest corridors and past lakes of cobalt blue before dropping down into a cycling oasis, where trail-weary mountain bikers can fix a meal, crack a beer and discuss gear ratios before resting their heads on a feather pillow, which is adorned with an electrolyte supplement instead of a mint. “I designed everything to help people get on their bikes and get going,” Cricket Butler, who recently opened the Whitefish Bike Retreat along the Whitefish Trail near Beaver Lake, said. Given the plush, bike-centric amenities and the two-wheel aesthetic of the lodge-like accommodations, getting going is easier said than done, and some bikers find themselves lingering on the couch with a pastry and a hot cup of Pedal Push, the retreat’s Montana Coffee Trader’s blend.
